How can I tell what is good for me?

You need to listen to your body. Your body knows what you need when it comes time to eat, exercise, and get enough rest. It's important to pay attention to your body so you don't overdo things. Take care of your body and make sure that you're staying healthy.

What should I eat?

You should eat lots of vegetables and fruits. These fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals, which can help you keep your immune systems strong. Fruits and veggies are also high in fiber, which makes them filling and helps with digestion. Include at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day.

Water is essential for your body. Water flushes toxins from your body and helps you feel full between meals. Drink about eight glasses each day.

Choose whole grains over refined grains. Whole grains have all their nutrients intact, including B vitamins, iron, zinc, magnesium, calcium, and protein. Refined grain has lost some of its nutrition.

Sugary drinks should be avoided. Sugary drinks have empty calories and are a major contributor to obesity. Instead, opt for water, milk, or unsweetened tea.

Avoid fast food. Fast food has very little nutritional value. It may taste great but it won't give you the energy you need to function properly. Avoid soups, sandwiches and other unhealthy options.

Limit your alcohol intake. Alcohol contains empty calories and contributes to poor nutrition. Limit your intake of alcohol to two drinks per week.

Reduce your consumption of red meat. Red meats are high in saturated fat and cholesterol. Lean cuts of beef or pork, lamb and chicken, as well as fish, are better choices.

What does the term "vitamins" mean?

Vitamins are organic compounds found naturally in food. Vitamins are essential for our bodies to absorb nutrients from the foods we eat. Vitamins cannot be made by the body; they must be taken from food.

There are two types if vitamins: water soluble, and fat soluble. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve easily when they are dissolved in water. Some examples include vitamin C,B1 and B2 vitamins (thiamine), B2 and riboflavin, B3 and B6 vitamins (niacin), folic acids, biotin, pantothenic acids, and cholesterol. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the liver, fatty tissue and kidneys. These include vitamin D, E and K, as well as beta carotene.

Vitamins can be classified by their biological activity. There are eight main groups of vitamins.

  • A - Vital for normal growth and maintaining good health.
  • C - important for proper nerve function and energy production.
  • D - necessary for healthy bones and teeth.
  • E - needed for good vision and reproduction.
  • K - essential for healthy muscles, nerves, and bones.
  • P - Vital for strong bones and teeth.
  • Q - aids digestion and absorption of iron.
  • R - necessary for making red blood cells.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamins varies depending on age, gender, and physical condition. RDA values are set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

For adults over 19 years, the RDA is 400 mg per day for vitamin A. However, pregnant women need 600 micrograms per day because it is important for fetal development. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Children under 1 year old require 700 micrograms daily, while infants over one year old need 500 micrograms every day. This decreases between 9 and 12 months.

Children between the ages 1--18 years old who are overweight or obese require 800 micrograms per Day, while those who are overweight or obese need 1000 micrograms. To meet their nutritional needs, children underweight and obese require 1200 micrograms a day.

Children ages 4-8 years who have been diagnosed with anemia need 2200 micrograms per day of vitamin C.

2000 micrograms per person is necessary for general health. Mothers who are pregnant, nursing, or have a high nutrient need will require 3000 micrograms a day.

Adults over 70 years of age need 1500 micrograms per day since they lose about 10% of their muscle mass each decade.

Women who have been pregnant or are lactating require more than the RDA. Pregnant women require 4000 micrograms daily during pregnancy, and 2500 micrograms every day after birth. Breastfeeding mothers need 5000 micrograms per day when breast milk is being produced.
